Wissett Wines was founded in the mid-eighties by Janet & Jonathan Craft when they searched out Valley Farm, Wissett for the express purpose of establishing a vineyard. The first vines were brought from Alsace, France and planted in the spring of 1987.
The vineyard was enlarged some five years later so that there are now 8 acres of vines with the potential of yielding 10,000 bottles or more of fine English Wine each year.
The vines are all grafted on to disease-resistant root-stock suitable for our soils and climate. They are planted at 1.8m (6ft) to 2.4m (8ft) centres in rows set 3.6m (12ft) apart, for ease of machinery access. The vines in the old “clos” vineyard behind the barn are trained on wires at eye-level, a system known as Geneva Double Curtain, named after the wine-growing district in the Finger Lakes region of upper New York State, USA, while those in the newer, bigger vineyards are trained according to the Scott-Henry system that is adopted extensively in New Zealand.
The main varieties grown here at Wissett are Pinot Gris, Madeleine Angevine and Auxerrois with smaller plantings of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
Janet & Jonathan produce regional, quality still and quality sparkling wines, which are dry to medium-dry, and they recommend that you serve them slightly chilled – they are delicious on their own as an aperitif, and complement perfectly summer salads, fish and sea-food dishes.
