Sutton Hoo Chicken is a family business that produces wonderfully textured and full flavoured chickens deep in the Suffolk countryside.

The chickens roam freely over pastures next to the ancient Sutton Hoo Viking burial site close to the river Deben, Woodbridge.

Reared as free range or organic with high welfare standards, freedom to roam and a natural diet, mean that the Suffolk Whites are naturally slow growing, “old fashioned” birds, that produce a delicious meat.

Producing the Sutton Hoo chicken, which tastes like no other, involves 4 key factors.

1. Breed. - Suffolk Whites which are derived from a traditional breed of chicken more suited to growing slowly and living the Sutton Hoo life.

2. Environment. – The chickens are reared in small groups based in mobile houses, lit and ventilated naturally, and made up with fresh dry straw every day. They roam freely over 40 acres of pasture rich in various plant and insect species creating a completely natural environment promoting biodiversity.

3. Diet. - They are fed on a natural protein-rich mix of mainly wheat, completely GM-free and without antibiotics, growth promoters or drugs of any kind. This diet promotes a slower growth and allows the Sutton Hoo Chicken to reach maturity naturally.

4. Age. – The average age of a typical intensively grown chicken is 5 weeks and the normal free range chicken is 8 weeks old. All the Sutton Hoo chickens reach the age of 12 to 13 weeks. This allows them to develop naturally, promoting muscle growth from unlimited access to as much exercise as a chicken could desire.

As you can see Sutton Hoo Chicken have no restraints or limits in the rearing environment of their chickens allowing them to behave as normally as they want. Combine all these factors, mixed in with a relentless passion from the Sutton Hoo team and a chicken with a delicious full flavour and wonderful texture is produced.
